Erectile dysfunction (ED) is more common than many men realize—about half of men in their 50s experience mild to moderate symptoms. Despite how common it is, ED is not something you simply have to accept as a normal part of aging. The board-certified urologists at Urology Associates can identify the underlying cause of erectile dysfunction and provide personalized treatment options at any of our locations.
If you have difficulty getting or maintaining an erection firm enough for sexual activity, you may be experiencing erectile dysfunction (ED). ED is defined as the persistent inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance.
Erectile dysfunction can affect more than just physical intimacy. It may also impact self-confidence, relationships, and overall quality of life. Many men experience emotional stress or frustration as a result of these symptoms.
It’s important to remember that ED is very common and treatable. In fact, more than half of men over the age of 40 experience some degree of erectile dysfunction. Seeking medical guidance can help identify the underlying cause and open the door to effective treatment options.
Erectile dysfunction can occur when blood flow to the penis is reduced or when the nerves responsible for erections are damaged. A variety of health conditions and factors may contribute to these issues. Common contributors include diabetes, heart disease, prostate cancer treatment, depression, anxiety, and the side effects of certain medications. Lifestyle habits—such as sleep quality, smoking, alcohol use, physical activity, and diet—can also influence erectile function.
Other medical conditions that may contribute to erectile dysfunction include:
Heart disease
High blood pressure
High cholesterol
Diabetes
Obesity
Neurological disorders, such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease
Low testosterone levels
Because ED can sometimes be linked to underlying health conditions, it’s important to discuss symptoms with a healthcare provider who can evaluate the cause and recommend appropriate treatment.
If you are unable to achieve or maintain an erection more than half of the time, it may be time to speak with your doctor. During your visit, your physician will review your medical history and perform a physical exam to help identify possible causes of erectile dysfunction.
Your doctor may also recommend laboratory tests or other diagnostic evaluations to check for underlying conditions such as diabetes, coronary artery disease, or other issues that can affect nerve function and blood flow to the penis.
Identifying the underlying cause of ED allows you and your doctor to explore the most appropriate and effective treatment options for your individual situation.
You should consider scheduling a consultation if symptoms of erectile dysfunction or other forms of sexual dysfunction occur frequently or begin to interfere with your daily life, relationships, or self-confidence.
It’s also important to speak with a doctor if you have underlying health conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes, as these conditions can contribute to erectile dysfunction and may require medical evaluation and management.
Your physician will begin with a comprehensive evaluation to identify the cause of your erectile dysfunction. This may include a physical exam along with diagnostic tests such as blood work, urinalysis, or ultrasound imaging to better understand your condition.
Once the underlying cause is identified, your doctor will develop a personalized treatment plan. Treatment may include medication, medical devices, or procedures, as well as therapies that address contributing health conditions.
Oral MedicationsPrescription medications are often used to improve blood flow to the penis. When combined with sexual stimulation, these medications can help produce and maintain an erection.
Vacuum Erection DevicesA vacuum erection device uses a hollow tube placed over the penis and a hand- or battery-powered pump to create suction that draws blood into the penis. Once an erection forms, a tension ring is placed at the base of the penis to help maintain it.
Penile ImplantsA penile implant is a device surgically placed inside the penis that allows men with ED to achieve an erection. The implant is completely concealed within the body and controlled by the patient, allowing for spontaneity and a natural-feeling erection.
Injection TherapyInjection therapy involves using a very small needle to deliver medication directly into the penis. The medication increases blood flow and helps create an erection.
Intraurethral SuppositoriesThis treatment involves inserting a small medicated pellet into the urethra using a special applicator. The medication dissolves and helps increase blood flow to the penis, producing an erection.
In many cases, treating underlying health conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure can improve erectile function. If low testosterone is contributing to ED, your doctor may recommend testosterone replacement therapy.
Lifestyle changes may also play an important role in improving erectile function. Quitting tobacco, maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and managing weight can all support better sexual health. Some patients may also benefit from psychological counseling to address stress, anxiety, or other emotional factors affecting sexual performance.
