The UroLift® System is a minimally invasive procedure designed to relieve symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate. The treatment is typically completed in a single visit and may help many patients reduce or eliminate the need for ongoing medication.
During the procedure, small implants are placed to lift and hold the enlarged prostate tissue away from the urethra. This helps open the urinary channel and improve urine flow without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue.
The goal of the UroLift® System is to relieve bothersome urinary symptoms so patients can return to normal daily activities more comfortably. Clinical studies have shown that the procedure can significantly improve quality of life for many men experiencing BPH symptoms.
Unlike some other surgical treatments for BPH, the UroLift® System is designed to relieve symptoms while preserving normal sexual function. Many patients experience rapid symptom relief and a relatively quick recovery after treatment.
The UroLift® System treats BPH by lifting and holding the enlarged prostate tissue away from the urethra so it no longer blocks urine flow. The procedure does not require cutting, removing, or heating prostate tissue.
UroLift® can typically be performed in the office using local anesthesia. Most patients are able to return home the same day, and many do not require a catheter following the procedure.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as prostate gland enlargement, is a common condition that affects many men, particularly those over the age of 50. With BPH, the prostate grows larger and can place pressure on the urethra, which may lead to urinary symptoms. These symptoms can include difficulty urinating, frequent urination, urinary tract infections, bladder infections, and, in some cases, kidney complications. Treatment options for BPH may include medications, lifestyle adjustments, or procedures depending on the severity of symptoms.
In addition to medical treatment, certain lifestyle habits may help manage BPH symptoms. It is important to use the restroom when you feel the urge rather than holding urine for long periods, as this can place additional strain on the bladder. Some men find it helpful to follow a regular bathroom schedule.
Staying warm may also help reduce urinary urgency, as colder temperatures can sometimes increase the need to urinate. Double voiding — urinating and then attempting to urinate again a few minutes later — can help ensure the bladder empties more completely.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle may also help manage symptoms. Drinking enough water throughout the day is important, though limiting fluids in the evening may help reduce nighttime bathroom trips. Reducing caffeine intake and maintaining a balanced diet with regular exercise may also support better urinary health.
The UroLift® System offers several benefits for men experiencing symptoms of BPH. Many patients experience significant improvement in urinary symptoms, which can lead to a better overall quality of life. The procedure is designed to provide durable results while offering rapid symptom relief and a relatively quick recovery.
Because the treatment is minimally invasive, downtime is typically short, allowing many patients to return to normal activities soon after the procedure. Another important benefit is that the UroLift® System is designed to treat BPH symptoms without causing new or ongoing erectile dysfunction.
Individual experiences can vary, and not every patient is a candidate for this procedure. It is important to speak with your physician to determine whether the UroLift® System is the most appropriate treatment option for your condition.
Although the UroLift® procedure is considered very safe, some patients may experience mild side effects following treatment. These may include temporary discomfort, burning during urination, blood in the urine, an increased or urgent need to urinate, pelvic discomfort, or temporary difficulty controlling the urge to urinate.
In most cases, these symptoms are mild and resolve on their own within a few weeks, with many patients noticing improvement within about a month after the procedure. If symptoms persist or worsen, patients should contact their physician for further evaluation.
Many men choose the UroLift® System because they want an alternative to long-term medication for managing BPH symptoms. Some medications used to treat an enlarged prostate can cause unwanted side effects, such as fatigue, mental fogginess, or sexual dysfunction. The UroLift® procedure offers a treatment option that may allow patients to reduce or stop certain medications while improving urinary symptoms.
The procedure is minimally invasive and generally associated with a low risk of complications. For many patients, it provides symptom relief without many of the side effects sometimes linked to medication-based treatments. As with any medical procedure, it is important to discuss your symptoms and treatment goals with your physician to determine whether the UroLift® System is the right option for you.
There are a number of reasons that you may choose the Urolift® System. The first reason may be that medication has been causing side effects that you would like to avoid. For example, this procedure will preserve your sexual function. This also is a good option if you do not have time to recover from a procedure, as this procedure has very minimal downtime. You may also not want to go through another major surgery because of the risk of major complications.
It is most important that you speak with your physician about your BPH and what you are wanting out of your treatment. If you are currently on medication, then you will want to note any symptoms you are experiencing and what you do not like and what you do like. We recommend keeping a notebook of your symptoms with anything. This will keep a clear layout of what exactly is happening. You can then discuss this with your physician to see if the Urolift® System is right for you.
The Urolift® System is a very simple procedure that is performed by your urologist. Your physician will place small implantable prostatic retractors on the urethra. These implantable prostatic retractors hold the prostate lobes apart. You may picture this like window curtains on a window. This is done to relieve the compression on the urethra and allows the urine to flow again like normal. You will be able to return home on the same day as the procedure.
The UroLift® System is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). During the procedure, a urologist places small implants that gently hold the enlarged prostate tissue apart. This helps reduce pressure on the urethra and improves the flow of urine.
Many men consider this procedure when medications are not providing enough relief or when they are experiencing unwanted side effects from those medications. The UroLift® System is designed to relieve urinary symptoms and help patients return to their normal daily activities.
Combining treatment with healthy lifestyle habits, such as maintaining a balanced diet and staying physically active, may also help support long-term urinary health. If you are experiencing symptoms of BPH, schedule an appointment to speak with one of our physicians and find out whether the UroLift® System may be the right treatment option for you.
