Procedures such as nephrectomy and prostatectomy once required extended hospital stays and lengthy recovery periods. Today, Urology Associates offers a more advanced option: robotic-assisted surgery using the da Vinci® system.
Our skilled urologists have extensive experience with this state-of-the-art technology and perform hundreds of robotic procedures each year. Robotic surgery allows for greater precision, smaller incisions, and consistently excellent outcomes for many urologic conditions.
Robotic surgery refers to procedures performed using the da Vinci® Surgical System, an advanced technology designed for minimally invasive surgery. This approach allows surgeons to perform complex procedures with exceptional precision and control.
Urology Associates was among the first practices in the region to adopt this innovative technology. Today, our surgeons perform more robotic procedures than any other urology practice along the Gulf Coast and in the surrounding areas.
During robotic surgery, a small incision allows a thin camera to be inserted into the surgical area. The camera provides detailed, high-definition images to a monitor at a nearby surgical console. Additional small incisions allow miniature surgical instruments to be inserted and guided by robotic arms. The surgeon remains in full control throughout the procedure, using the console to precisely direct every movement of the robotic instruments.
Urology Associates performs two primary procedures using da Vinci® robotic technology: robotic prostatectomy and robotic nephrectomy.
Robotic Prostatectomy:During a robotic prostatectomy, your surgeon removes the prostate gland along with any surrounding tissue affected by disease. Traditional open prostatectomy required a large incision, which often meant longer recovery times. With the robotic approach, the surgeon performs the procedure through a small series of tiny incisions, allowing for greater precision and a less invasive experience.
Robotic Nephrectomy:In a robotic nephrectomy, your surgeon removes either part of the kidney or the entire kidney, along with nearby diseased tissue if necessary. Similar to prostate surgery, traditional open nephrectomy required a large incision. Robotic surgery allows the procedure to be completed through several small incisions instead.
If you require surgery involving the prostate or kidney, robotic-assisted procedures can help achieve excellent results while reducing pain, scarring, and recovery time.
Robotic-assisted surgery offers several advantages compared with traditional open procedures, including:
Reduced damage to surrounding tissue
Lower risk of infection after surgery
Less blood loss during the procedure
Reduced postoperative pain
Minimal internal scarring
Shorter hospital stays
Many patients who undergo robotic prostatectomy or robotic nephrectomy experience a significantly faster recovery compared with those who have traditional open surgery.
For conditions such as prostate cancer, kidney cancer, or other serious urologic diseases, robotic surgery provides a minimally invasive option designed to achieve excellent outcomes while reducing recovery time.
