Kidney stones are a common but often extremely painful condition that can significantly disrupt daily life. As kidney stones move through the urinary tract, they can cause sudden, severe pain, nausea, vomiting, and difficulty urinating. In addition to discomfort, kidney stones can increase the risk of urinary tract infections and, if left untreated, may lead to more serious complications. The board-certified urologists at Urology Associates specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of kidney stones, helping patients find relief from pain while restoring urinary and overall health.
At Urology Associates of Charleston, we understand that no two patients experience kidney stones in the same way. Stones can vary in size, location, and composition, and symptoms can range from mild discomfort to debilitating pain that requires immediate medical attention. Because of this, our team offers customized treatment plans designed to address each patient’s specific condition, symptoms, and medical history. Our goal is not only to treat the current stone but also to help reduce the risk of future stone formation whenever possible.
For patients with smaller kidney stones that are not causing severe or disruptive symptoms, conservative management may be recommended. This approach often includes increasing fluid intake to help flush the stone through the urinary tract naturally. Drinking plenty of water can dilute urine and encourage stone passage. Pain relievers such as ibuprofen may be used to manage discomfort during this process, and certain medications can help relax the muscles in the ureters, making it easier for the stone to pass with less pain. During this time, our physicians closely monitor progress and provide guidance to ensure symptoms remain manageable and complications do not develop.
When kidney stones are larger or symptoms become more severe, more advanced treatment options may be necessary. One commonly used, non-invasive option is extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). ESWL uses focused sound waves to break kidney stones into smaller fragments, allowing them to pass through the urinary tract more easily. This treatment does not require surgical incisions and is often performed on an outpatient basis. ESWL can significantly reduce pain and shorten recovery time while effectively addressing stones that are unlikely to pass on their own.
In cases where stones are particularly large, complex, or resistant to other treatments, your urologist may recommend percutaneous nephrolithotomy. This minimally invasive surgical procedure involves making a small incision in the back to access the kidney directly. Using specialized instruments, the surgeon can remove the stone entirely or break it into smaller pieces for removal. While more involved than other treatments, percutaneous nephrolithotomy is highly effective for severe cases and is performed with careful attention to patient safety and recovery.
Beyond immediate treatment, the team at Urology Associates places a strong emphasis on education and prevention. Kidney stones can recur, especially if underlying risk factors are not addressed. Our physicians may evaluate factors such as diet, hydration habits, metabolic conditions, and family history to help identify why stones formed in the first place. By understanding these contributors, we can offer personalized recommendations to reduce the likelihood of future stone development.
Kidney stone pain should never be ignored. If you are experiencing severe discomfort, blood in your urine, fever, or difficulty urinating, prompt medical evaluation is essential. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can prevent complications and provide faster relief.
