What is a Penile Implant?

A penile implant is a medical device that your urologist surgically places inside the penis during a specialized procedure. For many men experiencing erectile dysfunction, penile implants can provide a reliable and effective treatment option. In particular, men who have developed erectile dysfunction after prostate cancer treatment, Peyronie’s disease, or other related conditions often find that a penile implant helps restore sexual function and improve overall quality of life.

What are the Options for Penile Implants?

Urology Associates offers two types of penile implants to help treat erectile dysfunction: semirigid implants and inflatable implants.

  • Semirigid Penile Implant:
A semirigid penile implant consists of two flexible rods placed inside the penis. When you want an erection, you simply position the rods upward to create firmness for intercourse. Afterward, the penis can be bent back down into a more natural resting position.
  • Inflatable Penile Implant:
An inflatable penile implant—such as the AMS 700 Penile Implant—is another highly effective option for men with erectile dysfunction. This device is surgically placed inside the penis during an outpatient procedure and is completely concealed within the body. The implant is controlled by the patient, allowing for a natural-feeling erection and greater spontaneity. The erection can also be maintained for as long as desired.
  • How It Works:
An inflatable implant system includes three components:
  • Two cylinders implanted inside the penis

  • A small pump placed within the scrotum

  • A saline-filled reservoir positioned in the lower abdomen

By squeezing and releasing the pump, fluid moves from the reservoir into the cylinders, creating an erection. When the deflate button on the pump is pressed, the fluid returns to the reservoir and the penis returns to a soft, natural-looking state.

With both semirigid and inflatable penile implants, all components remain completely hidden beneath the skin, so the implant is not visible to others.

How Does Penile Implant Surgery Work?

Penile implant surgery is performed by your surgeon at the Urology Associates office and typically takes about an hour to complete. The procedure is usually done with local anesthesia, helping ensure that you remain comfortable and pain-free throughout the process. After surgery, you will need a short recovery period to allow the area to heal properly.

Your urologist will also guide you on how to use your penile implant. With a little practice, operating the device—whether inflating or adjusting it—becomes simple. Most patients are able to resume sexual activity within four to six weeks, depending on their surgeon’s specific recommendations.

Could a Penile Implant be Right For You?

  • A penile implant is designed to provide a long-term solution for erectile dysfunction (ED). Many patients choose this treatment because it offers dependable results and allows for a more natural and spontaneous intimate life.

    Key benefits include:

    • Designed to be a permanent treatment option for erectile dysfunction

    • Spontaneous intimacy, allowing you to have sex when the moment feels right

    • Once activated, the erection can last as long as desired

    • The implant is completely contained inside the body, so it is not visible to others

    • Designed to feel natural during intercourse and typically does not interfere with ejaculation or orgasm

    • Available in a range of sizes to provide a customized fit based on your anatomy

    • Treated with antibiotics to help reduce the risk of infection

    Important Considerations and Risks

A penile implant is intended as a permanent treatment. After the device is placed, the ability to achieve natural erections or use alternative ED treatments is generally no longer possible.

As with any medical procedure, there are potential risks, including:

    • Mechanical malfunction of the implant, which could require revision surgery

    • Scar tissue formation, shortening, or curvature of the penis if the device is removed or replaced

    • Temporary pain or discomfort during the healing process

    • Risk of infection following surgery

For certain patients—including those with diabetes, spinal cord injuries, or open sores—the risk of infection may be slightly higher. It is important to discuss all risks, warnings, and safety information with your doctor before undergoing the procedure.

    Patient Satisfaction

Penile implants have shown very high satisfaction rates among patients and their partners.

    • 98% of patients report their erections as excellent or satisfactory after surgery

    • 97% of patients report overall satisfaction with their implant

    • 96% of partners report sexual activity with the implant as excellent or satisfactory

These results highlight why penile implants are considered one of the most effective long-term treatments for erectile dysfunction.

Will My Penis Look Different To Me Or Will Others Notice A Penile Implant?

Once implanted, the device is completely contained within the body and not visible externally. Because it is fully concealed, others will not be able to tell you have a penile implant unless you choose to share that information—even in settings like a locker room.

How Long Is The Recovery Time After Ed Surgery, And When Can I Have Intercourse?

Most men are able to return home the same day or within 24 hours after penile implant surgery. Many patients resume normal daily activities within about a week, with sexual activity typically possible around six weeks after the procedure, depending on their doctor’s guidance.

How Long Does An Implant Last? Will I Ever Need To Replace It?

It is not possible to predict exactly how long a penile implant will function for every patient. Like any medical device, implants may experience wear over time and could eventually require repair or replacement. However, studies of men who received the AMS 700™ Penile Implant show that the device has a mechanical survival rate of more than 94% at seven years. Following your urologist’s care and usage instructions can help maximize the longevity of your implant.

Are Penile Implants Covered By Insurance?

While many insurance plans cover the diagnosis and medically necessary treatment of erectile dysfunction, coverage for penile implant surgery can vary. Medicare does have a national policy that includes penile implants as a treatment for ED, though coverage may depend on your specific location and plan details. It’s important to work with your doctor’s office and your insurance provider ahead of time to verify your benefits and understand your coverage. Financial assistance programs may also be available to help offset out-of-pocket costs or assist patients whose insurance does not fully cover the procedure.
