A UroNav® Fusion Biopsy is an advanced diagnostic approach used to detect prostate cancer with greater precision. This technology combines high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with real-time ultrasound to create a detailed, three-dimensional view of the prostate. By fusing these images, physicians can accurately target areas of concern identified on MRI, improving the effectiveness of the biopsy.
The process begins with an MRI scan, which provides detailed images of the prostate and highlights suspicious or abnormal regions. During the biopsy, these MRI images are digitally merged with live ultrasound imaging through the UroNav system. This fusion allows the physician to guide the biopsy needle directly to specific targets, increasing the likelihood of identifying cancerous tissue compared to traditional random biopsy methods.
There are several situations in which a UroNav Fusion Biopsy may be advised. One common reason is an elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level, which can indicate a potential prostate abnormality. This approach is also beneficial for patients who have had previous biopsies that were negative or inconclusive but continue to show concerning signs such as persistently elevated PSA levels or abnormal digital rectal exam results.
Additionally, UroNav Fusion Biopsy is often used for patients diagnosed with low-risk prostate cancer who are undergoing active surveillance, allowing for more accurate monitoring of disease progression over time.
The UroNav Fusion Biopsy system offers a highly accurate and reliable method for diagnosing prostate cancer, supporting earlier detection and more personalized treatment planning.
If your physician has recommended a prostate biopsy, schedule an appointment with us at Urology Associates of Charleston to discuss whether a targeted biopsy using the UroNav Fusion Biopsy system is right for you.
